Homestead Health: Mustard Plaster

Homestead Health: Mustard Plaster

Stop that cough this cold and flu season!

This effective home remedy for respiratory ailments has been around for centuries because… well, because it works so well!

Not to mention that it is cheap and safe.

This was considered first line defense against bronchitis and pneumonia by the pharmaceutical industry right up until the early 20th century when patentable medicines became the standard.

All you need is equal parts of mustard powder (available at your local grocery store) and white flour mixed with water to a batter like consistency, spread onto a thin kitchen towel and placed on a well oiled chest, and covered with a heat pad.

Considered safe for children and pregnant women, the major safety concern is the possibility of skin burning from the plaster bringing so much blood to the surface. When working with someone who cannot accurately express discomfort, like a toddler, be sure to check their skin for signs of burning every 2-3 minutes.

Otherwise try to keep the plaster on for 10-20 minutes with heat over the top
