Have you ever wondered why our ancestors used bitter herbs before meals? As I've been working to improve my insulin levels and metabolic health, I've discovered an old-fashioned herbal remedy that's become part of my daily routine: **homemade herbal bitters!**

In today's video, I'm sharing how to make herbal bitters using gentian root, dandelion root, artichoke leaf, citrus peels and a handful of warming spices. It's surprisingly simple, and I love adding a little to sparkling water before dinner.

We're also diving into the fascinating science behind bitter taste receptors, digestion and hormones like GLP-1. While herbal bitters aren't a cure for insulin resistance, research into how bitter compounds interact with our digestive systems is certainly interesting!

GET THE RECIPE & SUPPLIES:

✅ Full Herbal Bitters Recipe & Tutorial: https://homesteadingfamily.com/herbal-bitters-recipe
✅ DIY Digestive Bitters Kit (Everything You Need): https://homesteadingfamily.com/digestive-bitters-kit
✅ Digestive Bitters Herbal Blend (Single Bag): https://homesteadingfamily.com/digestive-bitters

IN THIS VIDEO, YOU'LL LEARN:
✅ What herbal bitters are and why they were traditionally used before meals.
✅ How bitter taste receptors are connected to digestive signaling and hormones such as GLP-1.
✅ Why I'm incorporating herbal bitters into my personal wellness routine.
✅ Which herbs I use and why I chose them.
✅ How to make a homemade herbal bitters tincture using simple ingredients.
✅ My favorite way to enjoy bitters in sparkling water before dinner.

One thing I especially love about this recipe is how easy it is to make at home. And thanks to my friend CeAnne at Farmhouse Teas, you can now get the herbs premeasured in a convenient kit instead of purchasing large quantities of ingredients you'll only need a little of.

Sometimes the old-fashioned skills we've nearly forgotten are worth taking another look at!

Have you ever tried herbal bitters? Let me know in the comments!

Always consult your healthcare professional before using herbal preparations, especially if you take medications or have underlying health conditions.*

What can fruit trees teach us about faith, resilience, and growing stronger through life's challenges? 🌳

In today's video, I'm sharing how our orchard helped me understand the difference between striving in my own strength and allowing God to develop deep roots of faith that can withstand life's storms.

Whether you're in a season of abundance or walking through a difficult season, I hope this conversation encourages you to put down deeper roots, trust God's timing, and remember that lasting fruit comes from Him.

I'd love to hear from you in the comments: What has God been teaching you through the challenges in your life lately?

Lessons from the Orchard

views October 21st

Winter is coming, and we're rethinking some of the ways we do things on our homestead!

As we transition from fall into winter here in North Idaho, we're looking at everything from livestock and food storage to daily chores and what it really means to become more self-sufficient.

Whether you're new to homesteading or you've been doing this for years, we hope this conversation encourages you to rethink your priorities and embrace the season you're in.

What's one thing you're rethinking or doing differently on your homestead this winter? Are you simplifying your livestock setup, changing how you preserve food, or finding new ways to become more self-sufficient?

Let us know in the comments! We'd love to hear what you're learning.

🌿 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR: FARMHOUSE TEAS

We're thankful to have Farmhouse Teas sponsoring today's episode! We love their herbal teas, including their Not Coffee blends and the custom Plum Tuckered Out tea. This year, we're especially excited about their elderberry syrup mix, which makes preparing homemade elderberry syrup so much easier when there isn't time to forage for elderberries or measure out individual herbs.

We're Rethinking How We Homestead (Again!)

views October 17th

In this episode, I’m sharing a very personal update on my health journey and what I’ve learned along the way.

What started as frustration over stubborn weight eventually led to deeper testing, toxin exposure, high insulin levels, leptin resistance, thyroid concerns, and a whole lot of questions.
The good news is that I’m seeing real progress.

My insulin numbers are coming down, I’ve lost weight, my energy is better, my brain fog is gone, I’m sleeping better, and I’m getting stronger.

This journey hasn’t been simple or linear, but I hope sharing it encourages you to keep asking questions, pay attention to what your body is telling you, and keep moving toward better health.

In this episode, I’m talking about:

- What my lab work revealed
- My experience with toxin testing and detoxification
- How my insulin levels changed
- What I’ve been doing to improve my metabolic health
- The diet, herbs, movement, sleep, and lifestyle changes I’ve focused on
- Why strength training is now part of my routine
- What I’ve learned from discouraging lab results
- Why I’m choosing to keep walking toward better health

How I Reversed my Pre-Diabetes (Health Update)

63.2K views October 10th

What do high gas prices have to do with free potatoes? More than you might think!

When everyday expenses keep climbing, it’s easy to feel like there’s very little we can do about it. But Josh and I have found that growing food, cooking from scratch, and choosing our homestead projects carefully can help us take back a little control.

In this episode of Everyday Homesteading, we’re sharing the story of a $2,000 garden investment we made when money was tight, why we call this year’s potatoes “free,” and how we decide which projects are worth our time and money. And while Josh would start with the garden, I think there’s an important first step right in your kitchen!

You don’t need a big property or an established homestead to begin. I hope this conversation encourages you to choose one practical step that serves your family today and helps you provide more for them in the years ahead.
