Welcome To

Homesteading Family

We’re Carolyn and Josh Thomas!  We live on 40 acres in Idaho with our 11 children where we grow, preserve, and prepare most of our own food right in our own backyard.

As young parents with a quickly growing family and a desire to feed them healthy, whole foods (even on a tight budget) we knew very quickly that we were going to have to figure out how to grow and prepare it ourselves... good food was just too expensive!

But we didn’t have anyone around us that we could ask about how to make this homesteading thing work. We felt completely alone and scrambling for answers while dealing with the demands of life.

After years of studying, trial and error and learning from anyone who knew more than us, we started figuring out how to make a productive, old fashioned life in the midst of a modern world. We were raising and growing most of our family’s food and medicine, and enjoying the results of eating healthy food, working together as a family, and being more connected to our land.

We didn’t want others to have to go through the same struggles we experienced, so we created Homesteading Family.

As the years have passed we have had an opportunity to speak into the lives of more and more families… And while we are so blessed to get to help others, we also know that this is just the beginning.

Now it is time to take the next step in your journey.

The Homestead Kitchen Membership will help you transform your home from a consumer based home into a productive and healthy home, through thoughtful instruction and well-designed content.

We hope you join us and can’t wait to see how your homestead grows.

“I grew up in a bit of a homesteading family and a lot of that lifestyle, yet I moved to the city and had children who never were good city-slickers! I brought them back to the community of my childhood when they were young and now I'm still living in town and longing for the homestead life. This has already been inspiring and I've enjoyed learning from your YouTube channel and will be around learning more even if I move to the bigger city for a time.”

What do high gas prices have to do with free potatoes? More than you might think!

When everyday expenses keep climbing, it’s easy to feel like there’s very little we can do about it. But Josh and I have found that growing food, cooking from scratch, and choosing our homestead projects carefully can help us take back a little control.

In this episode of Everyday Homesteading, we’re sharing the story of a $2,000 garden investment we made when money was tight, why we call this year’s potatoes “free,” and how we decide which projects are worth our time and money. And while Josh would start with the garden, I think there’s an important first step right in your kitchen!

You don’t need a big property or an established homestead to begin. I hope this conversation encourages you to choose one practical step that serves your family today and helps you provide more for them in the years ahead.

Crazy Gas Prices and Free Potatoes

252 views 80 minutes ago

This five-herb People’s Paste recipe is one of the herbal preparations I’ve kept with our family's homestead first-aid supplies for years.

In this video, I'll show you exactly how I make my version of People’s Paste using:

- Comfrey root powder
- Slippery elm bark powder
- Myrrh gum powder
- Bayberry root powder
- Garlic powder

Click through to the blog post for the easy, step-by-step instructions and measurements: https://homesteadingfamily.com/peoples-paste

I'll also share the story of the accident that convinced me I always wanted this blend ready on the shelf, why I chose each of the five herbs, the simple ratio I use to make any size batch, how I store powdered herbs, and an easy option if you don't want to buy five separate bags of herbs.

Remember, herbal remedies don't replace good first aid or appropriate medical care. Deep, gaping, contaminated or heavily bleeding wounds need professional evaluation.

Being prepared means more than having herbs on the shelf. It means having the right supplies, knowing basic first aid and recognizing when an injury needs medical attention.

In Part 3 of our Soil Series, I’m diving into soil organic matter and why it’s one of the most important pieces of healthy, productive soil. We’ll look at what organic matter actually is, how it feeds soil biology, improves water retention and soil structure, and the practical ways you can build more of it with compost, mulch, cover crops and less tillage.

The Secret to Healthier Soil? | Soil Health Part 3

As gardeners, we know growth takes time, patience, and daily care. In this video, I’m sharing how that same truth applies to our hearts and faith, and why the slow work of growth is often where God is doing His deepest work.

As gardeners, we know growth takes time, patience, and daily care. In this video, I’m sharing how that same truth applies to our hearts and faith, and why the slow work of growth is often where God is doing His deepest work.

Patience in the Growth

11.4K views September 23rd

If you’re trying to feed your family better-quality meat, it can be hard to know what all the labels really mean. Grass-fed, grass-finished, pasture-raised, organic... and once you bring that meat home, does it need to be cooked differently?

In this episode, Josh and I are talking about the meat we eat here on our homestead and why the way an animal is raised and fed matters so much to us.

We’ll explain the difference between grass-fed and grass-finished beef, what pasture-raised really means for chickens and pigs, and how you can start sourcing better meat without feeling like you have to make the jump to “perfect” overnight.

Then we’re taking the conversation into the kitchen. I’ll share a simple way to think about different cuts of meat so you know whether to cook them hot and fast or low and slow. Once you understand whether you’re working with a tender or hardworking cut, cooking meat becomes much less complicated.

We also talk about buying meat directly from local farmers, purchasing beef or pork in bulk, and why pasture-raised meat can have more variation in flavor and texture than what you may be used to from the grocery store.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s simply to take the next step toward better food for your family.
