The Family Economy

When looking at history, building a family economy was something that was commonplace. Now, it’s less likely that a family builds an economy that is generational. Join me with our guest, Rory Groves, as we discuss what the family economy means and the benefits that can come from home-centered living.

About Rory

Tired of city living and the non-stop grind of IT work, Rory Groves and his family moved several years ago to a large piece of property with an old farmhouse in order to forge a deeper connection to family living and to the land.

In doing so, they have discovered something new and recovered something old. They have been sharing their story, inspiring other families to reclaim a sense of home-centered living with all its economic and familial benefits.

Rory lives and works with his wife and six children on their farm in southern Minnesota. He is the author of Durable Trades: Family-Centered Economies That Have Stood the Test of Time and founder of Gather & Grow, a Christian ministry dedicated to rebuilding the family economy.

In Rory’s book, he discusses this analogy about patients who have experienced a heart attack or stroke or some other life-changing event in their lives and how many of them had this overwhelming sense that something was about to go wrong.

Doctors don’t really have an answer for it, but in Rory’s book, the Family Economy, he equates that feeling of impending health issues with impending doom about today’s economy. It’s strange to say because we’re living in a time where every human impulse can be satisfied; we’re living in incredible abundance and prosperity, yet there’s still this feeling that something bad is looming.

There are so many markers that our societal health is declining… from record cases of mental illness, depression, loneliness, etc. How is it that in a time where we have so much at our fingertips, we are a generation that’s more mentally ill than any before us?

Dive in deeper in this podcast episode as Rory explains where the roles got reversed and how industrialization has destroyed family relationships and the family economy.
